Bio
Julia Hembree Smith (b. 1992, Saint Louis, MO) received a BA in Art at Union University (Jackson, TN) in 2014 and moved to Brooklyn shortly after. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Studio Art at Brooklyn College (Class of 2024).
Smith’s background in editorial and commercial photography led to working with clients like Vogue, Adobe, PBS, Facebook, CNN, and Brooklyn Academy of Music before making a transition into a more multimedia-focused studio practice.
Since then her work has been published in magazines such as Image Journal and Adobe 99U, exhibited in Tennessee and New York, and given visiting artist lectures at Columbia University and Yeshiva University. She is currently working on a collaboration of works with five emerging poets entitled “Honey Tongue” that will be completed in 2024.

Artist Statement
I am a conceptual artist who works in installation, multimedia, and the assemblage of ready-made materials. Infusing my work with a poetic sensibility, I use repetition, fragmentation, clever wordplay, and metaphorical expressions to address metaphysical subjects of love, beauty, and time.
